What is Love??

Valentine’s Day is here and it is a day of love. Give love to the ones you love, sharing gifts and acts of kindness. I often ask myself simple questions, and on today I thought about, what exactly is love? The dictionary defines love as an intense feeling of deep affection. That’s a-lot.

There are different levels of love. There’s the love of family members, love of friends, romantic love, and self love. Have you experienced love? When I think of love I think of sacrifice and commitment. But how do you show love? There’s a book that talks about the 5 love languages. We all like to feel loved, but we experience it in different ways. According to the book, we give and feel love based on these 5 love languages-

words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time, and physical touch. Do you know your love language? Do you know the love language of those around you? Are you speaking to them in their love language?

When I think of what love is, I go back to scripture and reference 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NIV: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” Are you patient? Are you kind to others? Do you honor others? Do you hold grudges??

I was listening to the verse of the day today on the Bible app, and the pastor was sharing about the scripture of the day (1 Corinthians 13:4). He talked about how we love others based on our own definitions of love. How true is that? So often we base things on what we feel, but the truth of the matter is, the truth is already written. In the Bible, he has shared with us so many truths to help us go on our journey of life. As you go into this day and the days ahead, think about what you think love is and what that looks like and compare that with the scripture of the day. The scripture is our barometer of how we should walk through life.

On today and the days to come, be sure that you are loving others with the Love of God. Follow the scripture, as it tells us exactly what love looks like, patient, kind, has no envy, not selfish, not easily tempered, no account of wrongs. Will you be perfect, absolutely not, but keep striving. And others will see as you live. Remember you are one of God’s Ambassadors, do him proud.
